Today in class, we conducted an experimient which we get to observe the reaction of an acid with metal carbonates.

We tested sodium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate and calcium carbonate with nitric acid and hydrochloric acid.

Most of the results were the same. For every single experiment, we also had to test it with limewater and holding a match inside the test tube

The results were similar, the match would always blow out because carbon dioxide gas was being produced inside the test tube and the limewater didn’t have much of a reaction either.

The sodium bicarbonate was the only metal to have a big reaction, it was bubbling, fizzing and a sudden temperature change.

Today in class, we conducted an experiment which was about different metals reacting with different acids.

We were given 3 different acids: hydrchloric, sulfuric and acetic and 4 different metals: iron, magnesium, zinc and aluminium.

We only managed to test all 4 different metals in the hydrchloric acid. There wasn’t much of any reaction or ‘pop’ we were hopinf for. The magnesium was the only metal in the hydrochloic acid to even react. The magnesium immediately bubbled when the match was held over the test tube.  We did not get to finish the rest of the expriment and the class ran out of matches.

Some safety issues: everyone should be careful with what they are handling with, what chemicals they are using because some may cause serious burns.

Today, we had finally saw our corrosion experiment that we had done about three weeks ago.

The results weren’t too suprising. As I had predicted in my hyporthesis, the iron nail in the water was corroding. The nail was a rusty orange and the rust had sank to the bottom of the test tube. The iron nail in the silica gel showed no sign of corrosion, the silica gel also remained the same. The iron nail in the empty test tube also showed no sign of corrosion.

The only suprise for me was the iron nail in the oil. The nail was completely rusted and the oil had some of the rust floating around. In my hypothesis, I predicted that the nail in the oil would not corrode because the oil would preserve the nail. This just shows that oil can corrode iron.

We did a corrosion, precipitaion, combustion and decomposition experiment

The corrosion experiment would take a while because we will be observing how the iron will be corroded during a period of 3 weeks.

The precipitation was quite quick and easy. We had to mis 2 different, clear soloution together. The solutions reacted immediately. There was cloudiness and soon after, there were insoluble solids apprearin at the bottom of the test tube.

The combustion experiment was quite fun. The experiment required us to burn some magenisium ribbon in a flame. The magnesium quickly burned up. It produced a vey bright flame.

The decomposition experiment took some time. It required us to seperate a substance into 2 other substances. We heated up some nickle carbonate and a gas was transferring into the limewater. The limewater changed into a very faint purple colour.

So far in this new project, we have just begun. We have been placed into our new groups and we have completed our group contracts which I’m pleased about because my last group took far too long just completeing the group contracts. I have seen the rubric for this project and it seems much more easier than the last project. We basically have to conduct 10 practical experiments about chemical reactions and we have to write a scientific report on it. I think my group would function quite well, my group consists of people I have worked with and I know well. In todays lesson, we have conducted 2 experiments. One was about corrosion, we have to observe 4 iron nails that have been placed in a tube filled with air, oil, water and silica gel, and we will observe them once a week for 3 weeks. The other experiment was about precipitation, we had to mix a silver nitrate solution and a sodium chloride solution. After that, we have to write a report about the experiment.
